2023 saw another record year for the Awards and the big winners with China’s Wine List of the Year Awards are China’s Hospitality and Tourism Industries and the nations ever more discerning consumers everywhere who benefit from the significant gains that are being achieved each year with the standard of China’s wine lists.
Each year the standard of the wine lists that showcase these industries, and are available to those consumers, continues to grow with the highest percentage ever of 2 and 3 Glass Wine Lists across China achieved in 2023. This represents exciting growth for the Industry in China, both in quantity and quality.
This outstanding result further demonstrates the growing standard of China’s best Wine Lists today.
2023, also saw more records broken, with the highest number of Glass winning venues ever from Eastern China, Western China and Macau. In addition, 2023 saw the highest number ever of independent restaurants entering the Awards (up 25%) accompanied by the highest number ever of new entrants ever, overall (up 14%) – a strong pointer to a growing level of confidence in China’s Hospitality and Tourism Industries generally.
With categories entered, the most popular category entered in 2023 is, for the first time, China’s Best Listing of French Wines followed by China’s Best Listing of Chinese Wines – with this category also achieving a record year. This is wonderful news for China’s growing domestic wine industry.
The next most popular category was China’s Best Food and Wine Matching Wine List followed this year by China’s Best Wine by the Glass List and then, China’s Best Champagne List.
Finally, it is very encouraging to hear of the positive impact on respective businesses that success in the Awards is bringing to the Awards Glass winners, those venues and sommeliers deserving of recognition and reward; especially given the outstanding levels they are achieving.
Quote from Co-Chairman of Judges Peter Forrestal, on the 2023 China’s Wine List of the Year Awards … “Now in its eleventh year, China’s Wine List of the Year celebrates with a record number of entries and quality continuing to soar. Many previous winners are still involved giving quality to the Hall of Fame and snapping up some of the highly treasured awards for individual categories. Notables include Hakkasan, Ensue, Café Grey Deluxe and 8 ½ Otto e Mezzo Bombana, Shanghai.
Mainland China’s winner was Frasca from the Middle House, a strong international list with an Italian accent, outstanding by the glass and wonderful on spirits and cocktails. Outstanding for Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan was the MGM Cotai’s Grill 58: an imposing list with impressive champagnes and reds by the glass and an outstanding celebration of older vintages to delight heavy hitters.
The influence of world-class sommeliers has seen the immaculate presentation of so many wine lists which have been thoughtfully curated. The Grand Lisboa Palace Resort Cotai has suggested new directions for hotel lists with its 1500 wine cellar and a wine by the glass preservation system that enables 40 offerings by the glass!”
Quote from Co-Chairman of Judges Brian Julyan MS – Founder of the Court of Master Sommeliers, on the 2023 China’s Wine List of the Year Awards … This year’s entries have demonstrated the quality and diversity of the cuisines available in the Chinese market. The wine lists have continued to expand and improve in excellence and this year’s entries are very good examples, including a greater range of options for the customer. Tasting menus, which include accompanying wines, have been adopted by an increased number of entries. They demonstrate the considerable research and co-operation which has been carried between the kitchen and restaurant teams, producing knowledgeable and interesting selections. The Coravin options for Wines by the Glass are continuing to increase and are providing customers with the opportunity to sample wines which they might not otherwise have chosen. Chinese wines are continuing to be recognised for quality and these will benefit from these Wine by the Glass programmes, not only for the home market but especially where tourists are catered for.

Again in 2022 the big winners with China’s Wine List of the Year Awards are China’s Hospitality and Tourism Industries and also China’s ever more discerning Consumers everywhere who benefit from the significant gains that are being achieved each year with the standard of China’s wine lists.
Every year the standard of the wine lists that showcase these industries – and are available to those consumers, continues to grow with the highest percentage ever of 2 and 3 Glass Wine Lists across China achieved in 2022 – quantity and quality!
This outstanding result further demonstrates the growing standard of China’s best Wine Lists today. In 2022 the most popular category entered by applicants was Best Food and Wine Matching Wine List followed this year by Best Wine by the Glass List then, Best Champagne List. This year the Best Listing of French Wines was the next most supported category followed by the Best Listing of Chinese Wines – again great news for China’s growing Domestic Wine Industry!
Interestingly also, 2022 was again another record year for the Independent Restaurant sector – up again 8% on last year, and now, for the first time representing over 50% of the Awards entries across China reflecting the increased focus by this category on creating outstanding wine offers for their customers and wanting to let their customers know that they are!
Finally, it is very encouraging to hear of the positive impact on respective businesses that success in the Awards is bringing to those deserving of recognition and reward – especially given the outstanding levels they are achieving.
Quote from Co-Chairman of Judges Peter Forrestal, on the 2022 China’s Wine List of the Year Awards: … ‘When considering the difficulties those involved in the hospitality industry have overcome in China this year, especially with the pandemic and lockdowns, it’s hard to believe, firstly, their resilience, and secondly, what they have been able to achieve. The improvements we noted last year continue. There are tighter, more carefully chosen lists by the glass and the game-changing use of the Coravin wine preservation system to increase the size and quality of what sommeliers can offer their customers. One of the great strengths of the Chinese hospitality industry has long been how well chefs and sommeliers can combine their talents to offer food and wine that are blissfully complementary. The best restaurants have taken that to another level.
There are two changes that have delighted the judges. Firstly, the increasing numbers of table wines from China that are featured on the best lists. For many years, we judges have been watching the giant strides made in the quality of Chinese wines and are delighted to see sommeliers and the public embrace these classy local whites, reds and bubblies through these wine lists. We have also noted the increasing strength of Beijing’s wine lists as they are reflected in the results of this year’s China’s Wine List of the Year.
Once again, these awards document the very best of what is happening in the kitchens and on the restaurant floors of the nation’s finest hospitality venues.’

The widening range of wines on offer reflects the increasing knowledge and professionalism of Sommeliers and the inclusion of a larger number of Chinese wines confirms the growing understanding and appreciation of the quality and styles available at the various price levels. A stunning wine list by Rill Ma with many highlights that perfectly complements the cuisine. Firstly, it is hard to go past the “Duck & Wine Pairing”, where Champagne, textural whites and vibrant reds have been selected for the affinity with Beijing Roast Duck. There’s also the well-chosen selection by the glass, with helpful descriptions, including premium wines served using the Coravin system. Commendation must also go to the stunning selection of Chinese regional wines. David Duan’s carefully chosen and immaculately presented list at ‘The Manor’ offers a tour of the great wine regions of the world. The compact list offers introductions to the best wines of the finest producers as well as outstanding examples of more modestly priced wines from these regions. It’s an extensive list by the glass, wide-ranging yet tightly focused on impressive quality and fair value. The choice of champagnes covers all the significant Grand Marque producers and all the important styles of bubbly. There’s a decent range of wines from China which will serve as a useful introduction to visitors to the country. Those looking for a lift towards the end of the meal will find the choice of cocktails and spirits has plenty to tempt them. Again, it’s the quality of the list rather than its size that delights. BACKGROUND / 背景
Established in 1994, the Wine List of the Year Awards were introduced by Tucker Seabrook (Established 1838) to recognise and reward the best quality wine lists each year in particular regions and countries. In 2012, Rob Hirst of Tucker Seabrook, the founders of the Wine List of the Year Awards and Tommy Lam the founder of the China National Sommelier Competition, and the China National Young Sommelier Team Competition, launched China’s first wine list Awards, China’s Wine List of the Year Awards; with the first year of judging in 2013.
“年度酒单大奖Wine List of the Year Awards”由Tucker Seabrook公司(创建于1838年)于1994年成立,目的是对任何一个国家内,为提升酒单质量所付出时间、技术和资源的餐厅和侍酒师的认可及表彰。今年已经是酒单大奖在中国走过的第10个年头——2012年,国际年度酒单大奖创办者Rob Hirst和中国侍酒师大赛创办者Tommy Lam在中国启动了中国年度酒单大奖(2013年度),开启了酒单大奖在大中华区的起航。
In 2020, Sommelier Press joined the China Awards as the Awards official Media Partner. Now in 2022, China’s Wine List of the Year Awards, includes more than 20 special awards recognising glass winners from over 60 provinces and municipalities across mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan.
Now, as one of the most anticipated events on China’s Hospitality and Tourism industry’s annual calendar, these prestigious awards have contributed significantly to the lifting of the standard of the nation’s Wine Lists. At the same time, the awards have recognised and rewarded the talents of many of the nation’s best Sommeliers and their supporting Owners, F&B Directors and Wine Managers.

MISSION / 任务
China’s Wine List of the Year Award’s mission is to seek out, assess, recognise, and reward the very best Wine Lists across China. Including the finest restaurants, hotels, cafés, brasseries, bistros, pubs, wine bars and clubs; as well as their Sommeliers, Owners, F&B Directors and Managers.
The Awards have also been influential in raising the public’s interest in fine wine generally and have improved the consumers’ appreciation of those participating establishments.
Today, the list of past Award winners reads like a ‘Who’s Who’ of outstanding establishments. It is a wonderful user map guiding consumers to the best wines to be found in the top restaurants, hotels, wine bars, cafés, pubs, and clubs across China.
中国年度酒单大奖的目标是为了寻找、评估、认可和奖励来自全国顶尖的餐厅、酒店、咖啡厅、酒馆、酒吧和俱乐部、航空公司、邮轮的优质酒单,以及这些机构的老板、经理和侍酒师,帮助大众提高对优质葡萄酒的兴趣,提升消费者的认可度。今天,酒单大奖的获奖名单就像一个“品酒地图”,引导消费者在中国很好的餐厅、酒店、葡萄酒酒吧、咖啡馆、酒吧、俱乐部和航空公司中找到很好的葡萄酒。

These China Awards will be judged by arguably the finest panel of independent Wine List judges ever assembled. The panel includes some of the world’s most respected international and Chinese experts in Wine, Wine Judging, Wine Service, and Wine Commentary; overseen by the two Co-Chairmen:
The panel is made up of other Master Sommeliers, including a previous Best Sommelier in Asia-Oceania, plus Masters of Wine, advisors to the China Sommelier Association – Preparation Committee, Wine Judges, Writers and Commentators from some of the most respected publications both in China and around the World.

Award winning and highly awarded restaurants will be invited to attend the awards ceremony. On this day, Owners, F&B Directors / Managers, top Sommeliers and supporters will meet and celebrate, as well as learn from and inspire each other; sharing their commitment to the future and their outstanding professional talents. Also, again in 2022, in recognition of the vital role they play in committing to and investing in the very best Wine Lists, and the Wine Team and the Cellar behind them, the new Award: China’s Outstanding Owner or F&B Director / Wine Manager Award will be presented. This Award will be won by the nominated Owner or F&B Director / Wine Manager, responsible for the winning lists from; firstly, Mainland China and secondly, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan.

Again in 2021 the big winners with China’s Wine List of the Year Awards are China’s Hospitality and Tourism Industries and also China’s ever more discerning Consumers everywhere who benefit from the significant gains that are being achieved each year with the standard of China’s wine lists.
Every year the standard of the wine lists that showcase these industries – and are available to those consumers, continues to grow with the highest percentage (%) ever of 3 Glass Wine Lists across China achieved in 2021!
This outstanding result further demonstrates the growing standard of China’s best Wine Lists today. In 2021 the most popular categories entered by applicants were again Best Wine by the Glass List followed again also by Best Food and Wine Matching Wine List then, Best Champagne List. Following last year’s trend, this year the Best Listing of Chinese Wines was the next most strongly supported category – great news for China’s growing Domestic Wine Industry!
2021 was again another record year for the Independent Restaurant sector – up an extraordinary 33% on last year, across China reflecting the increased focus by this category on creating outstanding wine offers for their customers and wanting to say so!
Finally, it is very encouraging to hear of the positive impact on respective businesses that success in the Awards is bringing to those deserving of recognition and reward for the outstanding levels they are achieving.

It seems that, in 2021, instead of increasing the size of their lists, sommeliers are looking to improving the quality of the wines they offer their customers. The best restaurants (both those which are in hotels and are stand-alone) are offering more extensive lists by the glass that are thoughtfully selected to be in tune with the restaurant’s theme or cuisine and offer patrons unforgettable experiences. Coravin is a vital part of this revolution.
Competition for the top awards have never been stronger: nor has the support among judges for all those chosen as finalists. The quality of the lists in a significant number of restaurants suggests that the expertise of sommeliers working in Chinese restaurants continues to be on the rise. This also suggests that the influence of the leading sommeliers in the country is spreading rapidly and helping to improve the restaurant experience for many patrons. This is a carefully curated wine list that gives voice to a fantastic array of wines by the glass – it takes the category very seriously and uses it in the way it was intended, especially through Coravin – and presents a fine dining wine experience of the world’s wines. Big names tend to dominate but there is admirable choice when you delve a little deeper. It is worth remembering that it is part of the Shangri-La chain with access to an amazing master list. It uses it well. Deputy Chair, Jeni Port.
In the end, 1515 West Chophouse won me over for its ability to satisfy wine lovers at all budgets. Yes it has an incredible range of top end wines, but also an excellent number at the more modest end of the market. It was an impressive international list, including a top selection of wines from China. Deputy Chair, Toni Paterson MW.
Hong Kong – Macau – Taiwan
Alain Ducasse at Morpheus, Cotai, Macau
This is a most impressive, fine dining wine list with a firm focus on France. It does delve deep into the Grand Cru/First Growth wine territory, providing a mouth-watering selection of names and vintages. This is its singular strength but it must be said that should the diner wish to wander away from France, they will also be rewarded. Deputy Chair, Jeni Port.
One cannot deny the premium nature of Alain Ducasse at Morpheus. The list is exceptional, including verticals of the top wines. Deputy Chair, Toni Paterson MW.
BACKGROUND
Established in 1994, the Wine List of the Year Awards were introduced by Tucker Seabrook (Established 1838) to recognise and reward the best quality wine lists each year in particular regions and countries. In 2012, Rob Hirst of Tucker Seabrook, the founders of the Wine List of the Year Awards and Tommy Lam the founder of the China National Sommelier Competition, and the China National Young Sommelier Team Competition, launched Greater China’s first wine list Awards, China’s Wine List of the Year Awards; with the first year of judging in 2013.
In 2020, Sommelier Press joined the China Awards as the Awards official Media Partner. Also, by 2020 China’s Wine List of the Year Awards, included more than 20 special awards recognising glass winners from over 60 provinces and municipalities across mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.
Now, as one of the most anticipated events on greater China’s Hospitality and Tourism industry’s annual calendar, these prestigious awards have contributed significantly to the lifting of the standard of the nation’s Wine Lists. At the same time, the awards have recognised and rewarded the talents of many of the nation’s best Sommeliers and their supporting Owners, F&B Directors / Wine Managers.
MISSION
China’s Wine List of the Year Award’s mission is to seek out, assess, recognise and reward the very best Wine Lists of greater China. Including the finest restaurants, hotels, cafés, brasseries, bistros, pubs, wine bars and clubs; as well as their Sommeliers, Owners, F&B Directors and Managers.
The Awards have also been influential in raising the public’s interest in fine wine generally and have improved the consumers’ appreciation of those participating establishments.
Today, the list of past Award winners reads like a ‘Who’s Who’ of outstanding establishments. It is a wonderful user map guiding consumers to the best wines to be found in the top restaurants, hotels, wine bars, cafés, pubs, and clubs across greater China.
JUDGES
These China Awards will be judged by arguably the finest panel of independent Wine List judges ever assembled. The panel includes some of the world’s most respected international and Chinese experts in Wine, Wine Service, and Wine Commentary; overseen by the two Co-Chairmen:
The panel is made up of other Master Sommeliers, including a previous Best Sommelier in Asia-Oceania, plus Masters of Wine, advisors to the China Sommelier Association – Preparation Committee, Wine Judges, Writers and Commentators from some of the most respected publications both in China and around the World.
2021 AWARDS PRESENTATION CEREMONY – SHANGHAI
This year, the 2021 China Wine List of the Year Awards Presentation Ceremony will be held in Shanghai, on Monday, 11thOctober 2021.
Award winning and highly awarded restaurants will be invited to attend the awards ceremony. They have demonstrated the considerable thought and care which is now employed to producing wine lists in China, Hong Kong and Macau and this has now become the norm. The competition is becoming ever closer and if it continues in the same manner the end result will be a number of lists equal first. It is becoming that close. The development of WBG programmes has developed hugely giving the customer not only the opportunity to choose wines to suit individual dishes, which is not only highly appropriate for Asian cuisine, but also providing the opportunity to sample the enormous potential of Chinese wines, which all lists should now include. “In the eight-year history of these awards, no list has dominated the voting for Mainland China as completely as Ensue has done this year. What has happened in the past year has been transformative and it now enters a new dimension as one of China’s most outstanding lists. The offering by the glass illustrate what has changed. While the numbers have only marginally increased, the quality has soared. A prestige champagne has been added. The substantial increased use of Coravin has been accompanied by a dramatic improvement in the quality of the Italian wines on show. Much of the credit must go to Han Yew Kong and the team: it’s not just that they have had the opportunity of adding 500 wines to the list. It’s what they have done to enhance its quality. 8½ Otto e Mezzo Bombana in Macau now has an Italian list which matches the quality of its cuisine as well as listings of the most important French regions that enable it to strut with China’s finest. Also announced in Shanghai tonight was a special addition to the coveted China’s Wine List of the Year Awards – Hall of Fame – Individual Award Winners –with the induction of the Awards foundation winner and long term supporter of the Awards Mr Paul Lo, Director of Food and Beverage, Lisboa Complex, Macau. As the first winner of the China Wine List of the Year Awards in 2013, Robuchon au Dome, Grand Lisboa Hotel, under Paul, then also became the first venue in greater China to be inducted into the China Wine List of the year Awards – Hall of fame – Main Award Winners.
Again in 2019 the big winners with China’s Wine List of the Year Awards are greater China’s Hospitality and Tourism Industries and greater China’s ever more discerning Consumers everywhere who benefit from the significant gains that are being achieved each year with the standard of greater China’s wine lists.
Every year the standard of the wine lists that showcase those industries and are available to those consumers continues to rise with the average score for all entrants in 2018 achieving 2.0 Glasses for the first time!
This outstanding result across all entrants and across the country underpins the growing standard of China’s Wine Lists today. So, not only are China’s best wine list getting better but the whole industry is improving – one of the ultimate goals of these Awards!
In 2019 the most popular categories entered by applicants were again Best Wine by the Glass List followed again also by Best Food and Wine Matching Wine List and Best Champagne List. Best Listing of Chinese Wines was the next most strongly supported category this year which is a great trend for China’s growing DomesticWine Industry!
2019 was also a record year for the Independent Restaurant sector across Greater China reflecting the increased focus by this category on creating outstanding wine offers for their customers and wanting to say so! Strong support also for the Best Medium List (100 wines) as well as the Best Small List (50 wines) categories – lists that the judges recognise are often harder to create well than large lists.
Finally, it’s great to hear of the impact on respective businesses that success in the Awards is bringing to those deserving of recognition and reward for the outstanding levels they are achieving.

BACKGROUND
Established in 1994, by Tucker Seabrook (Estd 1838) the Wine List of theYear Awards were introduced to recognise and reward the enormous investment by owners and sommeliers of establishments, in the time, skill and resources necessary to develop the best quality wine lists wherever they may be.
The mission of China’s Wine List of the Year Awards is to seek out, assess, recognise and reward the very best Wine Lists of greater China’s finest restaurants, hotels, cafes, brasseries and bistros, pubs, wine bars and clubs – large and small, plus Airlines and Cruise Ships and their Owners / Managers and Sommeliers.
Now one of the most anticipated events on greater China’s Hospitality and Tourism industry’s annual calendar, these prestigious awards have contributed significantly to the lifting of the standard of the nation’s Wine Lists whilst at the same time recognising and rewarding the talents of many of the nation’s best sommeliers.
From the consumers perspective, the Awards have also been influential in raising the public’s interest in fine wine generally, and have improved the consumers appreciation of those participating establishments.
Today, the list of past Award winners across greater China reads like a ‘Whos Who’ of outstanding establishments and is a wonderful user map in guiding consumers to the best wines to be found in the best restaurants, hotels, wine bars, cafés, pubs, clubs and airlines across greater China.
JUDGES
Again in 2019, these China Awards will be judged by arguably the finest panel of independent Wine List judges ever assembled, comprised of some of the world’s most respected International and Chinese experts in Wine, Wine Service, and Wine Commentary. The Panel of 25 judges is overseen by the two Co-Chairmen – Wine writer , Author and Judge and 27 year veteran Wine List Awards – Peter Forrestal plus the Founder and President of the Court of Master Sommeliers Worldwide – Brian Julyan MS. The Panel is made up of other Master Sommeliers – including a previous Best Sommelier in Asia-Oceania, plus Masters of Wine, advisors to the China Sommelier Association – Preparation Committee, and Sommelier Academy and Wine Writers and Commentators from some of the most respected publications both in China and around the World. It is these International and Chinese voices of wine authority that will oversee the final selection of China’s finest lists and guarantee their recognition on the world stage.
HISTORY
2019 will be the seventh year of the Wine List Awards in China. In 2012, the founders of the international Wine List of the Year Awards, Tucker Seabrook and Rob Hirst and the founder of the China National Sommelier Competition, and the China National Young Sommelier Team Competition, Tommy Lam, launched greater China’s first wine list Awards – China’s Wine List of the Year Awards and 2013 was the first year of Judging.
Since 2014, Vinehoo joined as a shareholder with the Awards and over the years the Awards have now developed into arguably the most recognized and respected Wine List Awards in greater China today. In 2018, PINOR was invited to become a strategic partner for China’s Wine List of the Year Awards. Founded in 2013, PINOR is today regarded as one of China’s leading wine web Media organizations and one of the most professional and rigorous in the industry.
Also, by 2018 China’s Wine List of the Year Awards, now includes more than 40special awards recognising Glass winners from over 60 provinces and municipalities across China, Hong Kong , Macau and Taiwan and together all parties in the Awards are now looking forward to furthering the positive contribution made by the Awards to the Hospitality and Tourism Industries across China in the years ahead.
2019 AWARDS PRESENTATION CEREMONIES – BEIJING & SHANGHAIIn an exciting first for the Awards, this year the 2019 China Wine List of the Year Awards Presentation Ceremony will be held in two cities – Beijingand Shanghai, on the 20th and 22nd October respectively, to recognise also the significant growth in fine dining and the quality of the wine lists in Beijing as well as Shanghai!
Winning and highly awarded restaurants will be invited to attend the awards ceremony where owners, managers and sommeliers and supporters will meet and celebrate as well as learn from and inspire each other and share their commitment to the future and their outstanding professional talents, thereby contributing towards the ultimate wine lists for restaurants and diners.
Also in 2019 another exciting first takes place – this year, in recognition of the vital role they play in committing to and investing in the very best Wine Lists – and the Wine Team and the Cellar behind them, a new Award has been announced – “China’s Outstanding Owner or F&B Director/ Wine Manager” Award. This Award will be won by the nominated – Owner or F&B Director or Wine Manager, responsible for the two winning lists from – Mainland China and Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.

Also, in 2018, for the first time 58% of entrants achieved either a 2 or a 3 Glass Award with the highest Level – 3 Glasses going this year to a record 25% of the Entrants!
In 2018 the most popular categories entered by applicants were firstly Best Wine by the Glass List followed again by Best Food and Wine Matching Wine List then Best Champagne List. Best Listing of Chinese Wines was strongly supported this year also which is a great trend for China’s growing Domestic Wine Industry to see and there was also strong support for one of the Award’s newest Categories – Best Luxury Wine Cellar List.

2018 saw the introduction of two exciting new Awards – China’s Best Wine Lists – by Consumer Choice and China’s Best Wine List – by Sommelier Choice which enabled greater China’s enthusiastic Consumers and knowledgeable Sommeliers to vote for their favourite Wine Lists. These were both fun Awards and received great support with over 137,000 votes received for the Consumer Choice Awards alone! – see winners below.
Quote from 2018 Co-Chairman Peter Forrestal on the 2018 Awards … ”Competition for the main awards of China’s Wine List of the Year was typically close this year, showing the strength of the best wine lists in the country once again. These showed the skill and knowledge of the sommeliers in producing balanced lists that mirrored their customers interests and the commitment of restaurateurs in financing such lists. In the large hotels, there is a noticeable shift away from master lists with sommeliers giving their list personality and individuality. There has also been a welcome acceptance of the importance of By-the-Glass lists in the best restaurants. With a number of the judges visiting Beijing for the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, there was a heightened awareness of the massive strides that the Chinese wine industry is making. So, there was pleasure in seeing more Chinese restaurants featuring these wines on their lists. The competition for the substantial number of awards offered by China’s Wine List of the Year suggests a vigorous restaurant industry. Shanghai and Hong Kong are leading the way as far as the awards go but there are signs of challenges coming from around the country.

Chinese wines receive International accolades and recognition, so they should find their way onto more lists, and particularly the Wine by the Glass programmes. The care and dedication of those responsible for compiling and maintaining these wine lists has provided another excellent and close fought competition”.

CHINA’S WINE LISTS OF THE YEAR – 2018
Mainland China: L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon (Shanghai)
This Shanghai restaurant follows in the footsteps of its Hong Kong sibling (2014) by winning the most prestigious award of China’s Wine List of the Year. It’s an impeccably balanced list which showcases the wines of France’s greatest regions. It begins, as the best lists do, with a selection that offers a choice of styles, grape varieties and price point. There are three champagnes: Veuve Clicquot Non-Vintage and its Rosé as well as the luxurious Krug Grande Cuvée; Loire varietals feature sauvignon blanc, chenin blanc and muscadet, and there’s a chardonnay from Meursault. L’Atelier’s list places the French wines in the context of other great wines from Europe by offering a riesling from the Mosel and a tempranillo dominant red from the Rioja.
The Champagne list is superb; balancing modestly-priced offerings from the major houses with growers’ bubblies, and cutting-edge producers with established family houses from all parts of the Champagne region. The list is particularly strong in luxury cuvées. The collection of Burgundies is similarly balanced from the less well-known aligoté to regional, premier cru and Grand Burgundies will thrill those who must try the best. The listing of Loire whites is exceptional while the wines from Alsace and the Rhone are a satisfying representation of those regions. Balance is maintained with reds from most parts of Bordeaux, at all price points. The stellar first growths are well-represented. Although the prime focus is on France, this is an international list which ranges around the world, offering excellence in its selection. However, there’s no doubting where its heart is. Hong Kong – Macau – Taiwan: 8 1/2 Otto e Mezzo Bombana (Hong Kong)
With another ranking in San Pellegrino’s World’s Best 100 Restaurants, three Michelin stars and the prestigious title of 2018 Best List in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan in China’s Wine List of the Year, Otto e Mezzo Bombana 8. sits comfortably among the finest places to dine in Hong Kong. Named to honour Fredico Fellini’s seminal film, 8., Umberto Bombana serves food which is at once authentically Italian and modern, alongside a wine list which, while international in scope, is patriotically Italian at its heart.
The range of Italian wines by the glass is a delight; as is the choice of a rare Sicilian sparkling, a Chianti Classico, a Brunello and a Barolo. The range of bubblies includes a wonderful array of Champagne with the house favourite, Krug, featured in a unique collection. Franciacorta, has the starring role for Italian bubbly with vintages of the outstanding Bellavista back to 1988. The whites feature every possibility including falanghina, greco and fiano from Campania. The coverage of Barbaresco and Barolo, with multiple vintages of the finest producers, is awe-inspiring. The selection of the communes of Barolo indicate the depth of the list while more than a dozen vintages of Gaja, Giacomo Conterno, Aldo Conterno and Bruno Giacosa illustrate its quality. Lovers of Tuscany will be overjoyed at the similar treatment of this outstanding region. The great names are there: Antinori, Querciabella, Isole e Olena, Fontodi as well as more than ten vintages of Ornellaia and more than 25 of Sassicaia. Viva Italia!
